The NAMS Research Affairs Committee (RAC), Chaired by Dr. Mark Cline, is pleased to announce a new initiative to achieve the following goals:
- Support career development of menopause practitioners and junior researchers
- Help launch early careers in menopause research
- Enhance the NAMS to goal to advance menopause research in North America
- Provide yet another benefit of NAMS membership
Through the NAMS Mentorship Program, potential Mentees who are NAMS members may apply to be matched with a NAMS Mentor based on the overlap between areas of research and skill set, as well as the fit between each Mentor’s interests and the Mentee’s goals, qualifications, and interests. The application process for the first 2-year term is now closed.
- The RAC will match a total of six Mentees/Mentors for the first 2-year term, extending from the 2009 NAMS Annual Meeting (Sept. 30-Oct. 3) to the 2011 NAMS Annual Meeting (Sept. 21-24).
- Matching will be completed no later than September 1, 2009, and matched pairs notified by September 15, 2009.
- During the 2-year term, each matched Mentee/Mentor must identify a specific research project to be developed, completed, and disseminated through the NAMS Mentorship Program.
- Each matched Mentee/Mentor should attend the next two NAMS Annual Meetings to meet with one another:
-- 20th Annual Meeting: Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2009, in San Diego, CA
(Mentorship Program orientation meeting is October 1, 2:45-3:45 PM)
-- 21st Annual Meeting: Oct. 6-9, 2010, in Chicago, IL
Although having a face-to-face meeting at the 2009 Annual Meeting is strongly encouraged, in exceptional circumstances (eg, maternity leave, conflicting congress, etc.), matched Mentees/Mentors may instead request permission to arrange an orientation conference call with the NAMS Mentorship Program personnel.
- The Mentee/Mentor pairs must work out a flexible schedule to communicate via e-mail or telephone and/or to meet in person at conferences or other mutually convenient locations.
- Each Mentee must work with the matched Mentor to produce a research abstract to be presented for oral or poster presentation at the 2010 NAMS Annual Meeting in Chicago as well as a research paper to be submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal, preferably the NAMS official journal, Menopause.
As a token of appreciation for each paired Mentee/Mentor, NAMS will offer:
- Complimentary registration at the NAMS Annual Meetings over the 2-year term of the mentorship (ie, 2009
and 2010).
- Official title of “NAMS Mentee” and “NAMS Mentor” on badge ribbons at the NAMS Annual Meetings over the
2-year term of the mentorship (ie, 2009 and 2010).
- Posting of names of paired NAMS Mentees/Mentors on the NAMS Web site.
- Complimentary calendar-year membership to the Society over the 2-year term of the mentorship (ie, 2010
and 2011).
