Profile of the NAMS 2011 Annual Meeting

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) convenes an annual scientific meeting each fall that is widely considered the top menopause-related meeting in North America. It is a unique forum where representatives from multiple healthcare disciplines and nations come together to present research and discuss the latest clinical recommendations and developments.

2011 Annual Meeting by the Numbers

  • A total of 1,265 registrants attended the meeting. Many of these attendees are key national and world opinion leaders in women’s health.
  • Of these attendees, 50.6% were physicians and 5.6% were nurse practitioners. Others who attended in significant numbers—reflecting the broad professional interest in menopause management—included physician assistants, nurses, certified nurse midwives, pharmacists, mental health professionals, nutritionists, exercise specialists, researchers, administrators, and editors.
  • Attendees came from 41 different nations around the world, underscoring the international reputation and significance of the NAMS Annual Meeting.
  • 77% of attendees were from the United States (see figure for breakdown by region).
  • Some 123 abstracts of previously unpublished scientific research were presented—24 as oral presentations and 99 as posters.
  • The Pre-Meeting Symposium, “Hormone Therapy A–Z: Update for 2011,” was completely sold out, prompting plans for a larger venue for the 2012 Pre-Meeting Symposium.
  • NAMS hosted STRAW+10, a major NIH-supported scientific symposium, immediately prior to the meeting, bringing together a coalition of expert organizations including NAMS, ASRM, IMS, and the Endocrine Society to refine and update the standard for staging reproductive aging. A report will be published in Menopause.
  • At least 24 media organizations attended the meeting, with dozens of interviews conducted before, during, and after the meeting and scores of online and print stories covering the meeting’s speakers and research presentations.

Extending the Meeting’s Reach

  • Those who missed the meeting or want to revisit key symposia can do so via the complimentary, registration-free meeting webcast available here to all through September 15, 2012.
  • Abstracts of the meeting’s scientific poster and oral presentations are published in the December 2011 issue of the NAMS journal, Menopause (print circulation 3,500 plus thousands more through online and institutional subscriptions).
  • Meeting news and highlights were shared on a daily basis via the NAMS Facebook and Twitter feeds and the “Meeting Highlights” page on the NAMS website.

Opportunities for Commercial Supporters

NAMS is grateful for the financial support from commercial sources for the 2011 Annual Meeting.

  • A total of 22 exhibitors presented their products and services to women’s health thought leaders who cannot easily be reached in other ways.
  • Three companies provided sponsorship grants to be designated Premier Sponsors of the meeting.
  • A 200-seat Product Theater was offered for the first time at the 2011 meeting and was virtually filled to capacity.
  • Scholarships were available to support 40 medical residents and fellows to attend the Annual Meeting.
  • A record number of other meeting-related sponsorships also supported the meeting.
  • Representatives from commercial supporters were invited, as usual, to attend scientific sessions and learn from the expert presentations.
  • Commercial supporters were invited, as usual, to submit abstracts of research conducted by their companies.
  • The NAMS Annual Meeting continues to be the ideal venue for marketers of products and services related to women’s health at menopause and beyond.
  • It’s not too early to explore opportunities for the 2012 Annual Meeting, to be held October 3-6, 2012, in Orlando, FL. For details, contact NAMS Director of Outreach, Mary Nance (mary@menopause.org), 440/442-7845.
