Tara Parker-Pope Emmaus, PA: Rodale Books; 2007
Tara Parker-Pope has provided midlife women with an extremely well-researched, clearly written guide to the many decisions that women face as they navigate menopause. She has investigated and clearly understands the issues surrounding medical decisions. Her interpretation of the medical literature reflects the current guidelines provided by The North American Menopause Society and the American Congress of Obstetricians & Gynecologists for managing menopausal symptoms.
The Hormone Decision addresses all areas of menopause and midlife health, including hot flashes, vaginal conditions, and low libido, which affect so many women as they go through menopause. She also discusses osteoporosis in a very clear and understandable way, along with strategies to both prevent and treat this disease.
The decision whether or not to take hormones is addressed by making the history and findings of the Women’s Health Initiative understandable. Ms. Parker-Pope presents all the currently available options for hormone therapy, including the risks and benefits associated with their use. The information she provides is based on sound medical research and can be relied upon by women who are making decisions that will affect their health and well-being.
I recommend it without reservation.
