NAMS provides answers to end menopause confusion
October is World Menopause Month, according to the International Menopause Society. This special designated month draws attention to the large public health challenge that menopause brings -- and to reinforce that women and their healthcare providers must have accurate, unbiased menopause-related information to make informed decisions that will lead to improved health and quality of life both around menopause and beyond. That's where NAMS can help!
BHT info from NAMS at MORE.com
The first article in our new collaboration with MORE Magazine (the leading consumer magazine for women 40+) is on bioidentical hormone therapy. It's available on the Health Channel section of their Web site. This exciting feature will appear monthly from NAMS on such popular topics as postmenopause and sex around the time of menopause.
NAMS attends ORWH public hearings
On October 14-16, the NIH Office of Research on Women's Health (ORWH) convened the fourth in a series of public hearings and scientific workshops to update the Women's Health Research Agenda for the coming decade. The meeting was cohosted by the ORWH, Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, and Northwestern Memorial Hospital and covered such topics as under-studied and under-represented populations, clinical and translational research, and new technologies.
Dr. Pauline Maki, NAMS Board of Trustee member and Chair-Elect of the NAMS Research Affairs Committee, gave oral and written testimony on identifying and treating cognitive and mood symptoms during the menopausal transition. Dr. Margery Gass, NAMS Executive Director Designate, was also in attendance as a member of the ORWH Advisory Committee.

Will it happen in 2010?
Will you become an NCMP (NAMS Certified Menopause Practitioner) next year? The competency exam leading to this prestigious credential will be offered on four dates at 16 locations, including Johannesburg, South Africa, and immediately following the American Association of Nurse Practitioners meeting in Phoenix, Arizona. The 2010 Candidate Handbook will be posted on the NAMS Web site during November.
Maintenance reminder
If you last maintained your NCMP certification or earned your certification anytime in 2007, you must renew your certification before December 31, 2009, by either submitting CME or resitting the exam. Don't let your NCMP lapse!

NAMS 2009 Annual Meeting huge success
Those of you who attended the NAMS meeting in San Diego can attest to the exceptional presentations, abstracts, and opportunities for networking. Many called it the best ever! "We are all indebted to Dr. Leon Speroff, Scientific Program Committee Chair, and his committee," said 2008-2009 President, Dr. JoAnn Pinkerton. Visit the NAMS Web site for access to the free Annual Meeting Webcast and podcast, and look for the meeting abstracts in the Nov/Dec issue of Menopause.
Pre-meeting symposium very popular
Supported by a grant from the NIH, the comprehensive pre-meeting CME symposium about depressive symptoms and cognitive complaints in the menopausal transition more than satisfied the sold-out audience. Look for highlights in an upcoming issue of Menopause.
Poster Prizes awarded
NAMS is pleased to recognize the recipients of the 2009 Poster Prizes announced during its Annual Meeting. "As Chair of the 2009 Abstract Review Committee, I would like to congratulate these individuals," said Dr. Ruth Freeman, "and I encourage researchers to submit their abstracts for consideration for the 2010 Annual Meeting." The online Abstract Submission Form will be posted on the NAMS Web site in January 2010. The deadline for 2010 abstracts is April 30, 2010.
Utian tribute was moving
Annual Meeting attendees witnessed the first of three tribute events in honor of Dr. Wulf Utian as he retires from NAMS at year's end. The educational session on September 30 featuring Drs. Isaac Schiff, Lila Nachtigall, Bruce Ettinger, and Vivian Pinn focused on menopausal medicine during "the Utian years," while an audiovisual presentation highlighted Dr. Utian's past accomplishments and future plans. The Tribute Reception that evening celebrated this special man who has meant so much to so many. Two additional exciting tribute events will take place in Cleveland on October 24.
