Leslee Kagan, MS, NP; Bruce Kessel, MD; and Herbert Benson, MD
New York, NY: Free Press (Simon & Schuster); 2004 ($12.00)
This 350-page paperback book combines the expertise of mental health professionals from the Harvard Medical School Mind/Body Institute and a leading menopause physician. Exceptionally thorough, this holistic offering covers the physiology of the menopause transition, the basics of good health and well-being, common concerns during midlife, and a full and medically sound discussion of hormone therapy and alternatives for menopause relief. A major focus is on the “Relaxation Response,” as defined by Dr. Benson, proven effective for decreasing the harmful effects of stress.
I found this book to be very proactive in form, encouraging women to sample from its integrated offerings in an effort to promote self care and renewal. I recommend this inspiring guidebook for empowering midlife women.
