Menopause for Dummies promotes itself as “a Reference for the Rest of Us.” Indeed, it is a reference book for all of us. Part of the For Dummies: Bestselling Book Series for Beginners, this is a wonderful guide to the issues, terminology, concerns, and complexities surrounding the phenomenon of menopause. The authors want to give women a clear view of the physical, mental, and emotional changes related to menopause. And they do just that.
The book is divided into six parts with a total of 24 chapters. Interestingly, the authors have provided the reader with a brief “Contents at a Glance” and then a further, more detailed “Table of Contents.” This allows the book to be a truly easy guide as the reader can maneuver through the text rapidly, either to review an issue or to answer a specific question. There is a significant effort to clarify terms. Throughout the book, through various cartoon icons, the reader is reminded of the book’s main points, or cautioned to get an expert opinion.
In what may be the most critical area of interest—the question of making the decision about hormone therapy—the authors prove their skill in explaining the issues, the studies, and the often conflicting results. They revisit the Women’s Health Initiative and explain the questions, the answers, and most important, the unanswered questions. They are successful in making a great deal of information understandable and user-friendly.
It is a pleasure to recommend this book as a reference guide for all women.
