The Female Brain
Louann Brizendine, MD
New York: Broadway Books; 2006
187 pages

This delightful book is an attempt to educate women about their “unique brain-body-behavior” system and how their hormonal status at various stages of life influences emotions and behaviors. The author also discusses differences in hormones and behavior between the genders. Included in the book is a basic brain anatomy lesson, new research about the female brain and neurobehavioral systems, a glossary of relevant terms, and an extensive list of references.

The Female Brain is extremely well-written and should appeal to women across a large socioeconomic and educational spectrum, although some of the terminology may be challenging at times. The book uses medical research to support the author’s premises but does not get bogged down in confusing details. Examples from the author’s clinical practice are used throughout the book to illustrate main points, and these add to the book’s readability and relevance.

I think most readers will find Dr. Brizendine's book to be a very informative and entertaining discussion of gender differences in hormones and behavior.
