The Dry Eye Remedy
Robert Latkany, MD
Long Island City, NY: Hatherleigh Press; 2007
216 pages

For those who suffer from a condition called "dry eye," a number that includes many postmenopausal women, this book provides an overview of eye anatomy and physiology, causes of dry eye disorders, treatment options, and helpful tips. The author is an opthamologist who specializes in diagnosing and treating dry eye disorders. His clinical experience is a rich resource and he includes a variety of case studies in the book.

The content is consumer friendly, including extensive discussions of Sjögren’s syndrome, allergies, rosacea, and many more causes of dry eye. Home therapy options are explained in detail along with a thorough discussion of various over-the-counter and prescription treatments. A brief discussion of the relationship between menopausal hormonal changes and dry eye is included. He concludes, based on current evidence, that decreasing androgen levels are the primary culprit behind increased dry eye among postmenopausal women.

Although some readers may want to read the book from cover to cover, a more likely approach is to find useful information in the index and go to sections of the book as needed. Unfortunately, the terms menopause and postmenopause are not included in the index.

The Dry Eye Remedy includes a clear and thorough discussion of this common, underdiagnosed, and undertreated condition that has a negative impact on the quality of life for many women. Limitations of this book include the lack of references and the author’s endorsement of treatment products and remedies without sufficient documentation of effectiveness.
