Q. Ms. Waterman, tell us a little about yourself.
A. I’m 51 years old and started the menopause process at the age of 48. I’ve been a secretary, a dental assistant, a dental office manager, and now I manage the office for my husband’s electrical construction company. I have a wonderful husband, two sons, a daughter-in-law, a grandson, and a granddaughter who are the joys of my life.
Q. How did you first hear about The North American Menopause Society (NAMS)?
A. I heard about NAMS during an appointment with my internist. She recommended NAMS as a great resource to answer my questions about menopause.
Q. What made you decide to make a contribution to the NAMS Foundation?
A. I felt that the resource materials I ordered were very helpful and have shared them with my friends. In the past, women’s studies have been somewhat neglected and I wanted to support the Society because I feel it provides crucial information to women around and after menopause.
Q. How have NAMS educational materials helped through the menopause transition?
A. The information I received from NAMS has enabled me to know what to expect as my body changes. The guidebook addressed all of my questions and gave information about many things I wasn’t aware of on the subject.
Q. What would you say to other potential donors to encourage them to donate to support NAMS activities?
A. For many years, the subject of menopause was “in the closet” and many women suffered with the symptoms alone and without anyone to answer their questions. NAMS provides an invaluable service and has made it possible to educate women about this natural change in their bodies. I feel it is a very worthwhile organization that deserves our financial support.
Q. And, finally, how do you hope your donation will help further the NAMS Mission of promoting the health and quality of life of women through an understanding of menopause?
A. I hope my donation will support further study of menopause and the aging process in women and that my support will help get educational materials to those who need it most.
